Today is the birthday of the greatest American writer of the 20th Century. I am, of course, talking about Howard Phillips Lovecraft, born August 20th, 1890. I couldn’t let it pass without writing some form of tribute to the man who, without his limitless imagination of cosmic horror, the horror world would’ve never been as we know it today. He was contemporaries with Robert Bloch (PSYCHO), Robert E. Howard (CONAN THE BARBARIAN), and Fritz Leiber, amongst others, going on to influence every great horror writer we revere today. Stephen King called Lovecraft “the Twentieth Century’s greatest practitioner of the classic horror tale,” and Neil Gaiman has called him “Rock and Roll.” That last quote could be taken quite literally as Lovecraft has been referenced in bands such as Black Sabbath and Metallica, amongst many others, with a psychedelic band in the 60s/70s even naming themselves after the man.
Seriously, SCREAM FACTORY is releasing news of title after awesome title they’ll be releasing on blu-ray every Friday throughout October, and recently they made the announcement that they will be releasing Stuart Gordon’s FROM BEYOND, based loosely upon the H.P. Lovecraft story, as a Collector’s Edition Bluray & DVD combo next year! There will be new extras along with the older ones which were on the prior 2007 DVD release. Bitchin’!
FROM BEYOND centers around a pair of scientists attempting to stimulate the pineal gland with a device called The Resonator. An unforeseen result of their experiments is the ability to perceive creatures from another dimension that proceed to drag the head scientist into their world, returning him as a grotesque shape-changing monster that preys upon the others at the laboratory.
CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT IN HI-DEF?! I CAN’T WAIT!

“Image Entertainment has now announced that this September Stuart Gordon’s 1985 gleefully gory horror classic Re-Animator will be getting a digital upgrade.
The cult favorite H.P. Lovecraft tale that made Jeffrey Combs a horror icon, solidified Barbara Crampton’s status as one of the 80’s leading scream queens, and gave new meaning to the term “giving head” thanks to the late David Gale’s decapitated deviancy is coming to Blu-ray on September 4th.
Image Entertainment has not specified the disc extras other than to state it will be “packed with bonus features (existing from earlier DVD releases), including audio commentaries from the film’s director, producer and cast, interviews, extended scenes, galleries, and more.”
The suggested retail price is $17.97, but right now you can pre-order it on Amazon for $12.58.
Herbert West (Combs) is obsessed with the idea of bringing the dead back to life. Experimenting with a glowing green fluid, he successfully reanimates dead tissue. Unfortunately, the dead are uncontrollable and difficult to subdue. Dr. Carl Hill, West’s instructor, is determined to steal his secret and take all the credit for the discovery. Herbert isn’t willing to give it up so easily. No matter what the consequences are! Stylishly directed by Stuart Gordon (From Beyond), this film adaptation of the H.P. LOVECRAFT short story “Herbert West: Re-animator” is a non-stop gore fest filled with wit and humor.
