NOTLD DOCUMENTARY BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD GETS A RELEASE DATE!

Birth Of The Living Dead Banner

In 1968 a young college drop-out and aspiring filmmaker named George A. Romero directed Night of the Living Dead, a low-budget horror film that shocked the world, became an icon of the counterculture, and invented the modern movie zombie, which has spawned legions of films, books, comics, and video games, generating billions of dollars.

Robert Kuhns’s BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD, a new documentary available on iTunes October 15 and limited theaters October 18, shows how Romero gathered an unlikely team of Pittsburghers — policemen, iron workers, teachers, ad-men, housewives and a roller-rink owner — to shoot, with a revolutionary guerrilla, run-and-gun style, his seminal film. During that process Romero and his team created an entirely new and horribly chilling monster — one that was undead and feasted upon human flesh.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD DOCUMENTARY COMING THIS FALL!

night of the living dead 1

Source: HorrorNews.net

For those of you (like me) living in the NYC area, the IFC Center will be premiering the new Night Of The Living Dead documentary BIRTH OF THE LIVING DEAD this fall (November 6th 2013)! Check out the details in the following press release:

In 1968 a young college drop-out and aspiring filmmaker named George A. Romero directed Night of the Living Dead, a low-budget horror film that shocked the world, became an icon of the counterculture, and invented the modern movie zombie, which has spawned legions of films, books, comics, and video games, generating billions of dollars.

Night of the Living Dead is not only internationally recognized as an art film, revered for its groundbreaking treatment of American race relations and allegorical references to the Vietnam war, the film still maintains its cult status as a classic horror masterpiece. The film made history when it simultaneously screened at MOMA and the notorious grind-house theater circuit on 42nd Street. Since its release Night of the Living Dead has been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress and the National Film Registry.

A TEASER TRAILER AND POSTER HAVE BEEN RELEASED FOR DOC OF THE DEAD, THE ULTIMATE ZOMBIE DOCUMENTARY!

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

THEY’RE YOU. THEY’RE US. THEY’RE EVERYWHERE…THEY’RE ALL MESSED UP…THEY’RE DEAD. DOC OF THE DEAD is the definitive zombie culture documentary and speculative chronicle of the Zombie Apocalypse. The film features appearances by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) and the Grandfather of Zombie-dom, George A. Romero (Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead). Others planned for the film include author Max Brooks (World War Z, soon to be a major motion picture starring Brad Pitt), Greg Nicotero (Executive Producer and make-up FX “The Walking Dead”), Charlie Adlard (Artist, The Walking Dead), Mick Garris (Stephen King’s “The Shining,” and “The Stand”), Steve Barton (Never Sleep Again, Hatchet II, Survival of the Dead, “Paranormal Paparazzi”), Alan Jones (Frightfest), and many more!

To learn more about the project and how you can help, visit the official Doc of the Deadwebsite, and “like” Doc of the Dead on Facebook! Also, be sure to check out the kickstarter page they still have running to help complete this amazing documentary!

The Zombie Apocalypse seems to be on everybody’s lips these days. Should we categorize it as fiction, dismiss it as far-fetched paranoia, or speculate about it as a plausible scenario? Doc of the Dead is brought to the screen by the creators of the groundbreaking participatory and award-winning The People vs. George Lucas – Director Alexandre O. Philippe, Director of Photography/Producer Robert Muratore, and Producer Kerry Deignan Roy. It’s co-hosted by Geekscape’s own Jonathan London and Red Letter Media’s infamous Mr. Plinkett (The Phantom Menace review), who will be sitting in his basement, far away from all the chaos.

Doc of the Dead delves deep into the myriad crevasses of zombie culture to deliver the first ever in-depth look at a contemporary social pandemic of global proportions. Shot and edited in a cinematically edgy, high-octane style, it will host a rich and entertaining dialogue with zombie experts and celebrities, seek participation from YouTubers and indie filmmakers, and examine viral cultural trends to explore the possibility and ramifications of an actual zombie outbreak with sociologists, virologists, chemists, and members of the Zombie Research Society.

In short, this is the film that zombie fans across the globe have been secretly waiting for; and because reality is scarier than fiction, prepare to be utterly and positively FREAKED OUT! And remember – always aim for the head.

Doc of the Dead is written and directed by Alexandre O. Philippe and produced by DoP Robert Muratore and Kerry Deignan Roy.

TOM SAVINI’S 1990 NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD COMING TO BLU-RAY

I don’t think Tom Savini’s remake of George Romero’s classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD gets the love it deserves. It was, after all, written and produced by Romero himself in an attempt to correct how he felt about the Barbara character and to perhaps finally make some money back on the movie he may be perhaps most famous for, as we all know there were copyright issues involved with the original. While not nearly as great as the original, it is still a damn fine film with incredible acting and makeup effects (much of which was cut by the MPAA).

Now it’s finally coming to Blu-Ray via Twilight Time (a company I haven’t heard of until now), though I have my doubts about it. I think a Blu-ray for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 1990 is necessary, and I believe the transfer will probably be adequate, the disc doesn’t even have all of the special features the DVD had. Commentary and Trailer, rather barebones for a film I believe deserves more. Additionally, I haven’t heard anything about it being an uncut version as well, something that is sorely needed given the MPAA cut the HELL out of this film.

NEW DOCUMENTARY, DOC OF THE DEAD, TO EXPLORE ZOMBIES IN FILM

According to Screen Daily, Exhibit A Pictures, the outfit behind THE PEOPLE VS. GEORGE LUCAS are currently working on a documentary that will explore zombies in-depth in all their film incarnations.

Director Alexandre O Philippe has revealed that he is already at work on DOC OF THE DEAD, a thorough new film that will explore zombies on screen in all their manifestations. Shooting is currently underway. Philippe has already spoken to SHAUN OF THE DEAD’s Simon Pegg for the film and is shortly to interview zombie guru George Romero (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD, DAY OF THE DEAD, etc.) on camera.

It’s no secret that we here at Backwoods Horror are zombie marks (even checking out the shittiest zombie flicks ever made…like the DAY OF THE DEAD REMAKE.), and there have been various documentaries focusing on particular zombie films, and even one or two documentaries about zombies in general, but nothing that has really gone in depth and explored zombies from the very beginning and given the subgenre the respect it deserves. Fingers crossed, this will be the one.

More as it develops.

BILL HINZMAN 1936 – 2012

How the hell did I miss this?!

Even though it’s old news now, I completely missed out on it so now you get to hear all about it again. Bill Hinzman, probably best known as the first iconic cemetery zombie featured in George Romero’s 1968 classic Night Of The Living Dead, passed away February 5th, 2012 at his Darlington, PA home according to The Hollywood Reporter. Hinzman also went on to star in Romero’s There’s Always Vanilla and The Crazies, going on to direct the John Russo penned The Majorettes, then directing and starring in FleshEater, with his last screen credit going to last year’s River of Darkness. Bill Hinzman died of cancer. He was 75 years old.

You’ll be missed, Bill.

HAPPY LATE BIRTHDAY GEORGE A. ROMERO!! 70 YEARS AND GOING STRONG!

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I couldn’t properly wish Uncle George a very happy 70th Birthday on Wednesday.  So, for George, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!  Here’s some video Q&A Footage from the Rue Morgue Festival Of Fear (and some viddy at the bottom from my brief introduction to the man).  We here at BACKWOODS HORROR LOVE ALL OF YOUR HARD WORK AND DETERMINATION.  He is not only a pioneer in horror filmmaking, or zombie filmmaking, but filmmaking in general.  He is a credit to the independent soul of the true filmmaking artist.  Cheers!

‘…OF THE DEAD’ TRAILER HITS THE WEB

Ok, took a look at the new ...OF THE DEAD trailer over at Fangoria (see below).  What can I say…  this movie looks like it’s going to blow as much as DIARRHEA OF THE DEAD .  Come on Romero.  I love ya, I really do…but…you know…this is starting to get embarrasing.  Check the trailer to see what I mean.  Looks like a Sci-Fi Original.  Damn, I really was hoping for a return to form, some last hurrah, but this thing looks like ass.  DAMN!

MEETING WITH GEORGE A. ROMERO

Here’s a video where I meet George A. Romero for the first time.  I’m a bit star-struck, I must say.  Another video will be coming soon about what I got signed and how the experience kind of sucked really (NOT GEORGE’S FAULT).
