MPAA CALLS ELI ROTH’S THE GREEN INFERNO “ABERRANT”

the green inferno banner

What can I say about Eli Roth? While I dug Cabin Fever (I liked Cabin Fever 2 a lot better for some reason), Hostel was just an excuse to gore up the place. Hostel 2 was an improvement, but Eli Roth seems to have really hit his stride as a producer. News, however, has been slowly leaking out about his newest directorial effort THE GREEN INFERNO, which looks to be his take on the classic Italian cannibal flicks of the 70’s and early 80’s. Drawing from such notorious films as Cannibal Holocaust, Cannibal Ferox (aka Make Them Die Slowly – also an early White Zombie album title) and others. One thing that can be said about Eli Roth, however, is that the man definitely loves the red red groovy and that (and his producing prowess) is one thing he has going for him.

So what does that mean? Eli Roth is nothing if not a product of his influences. Cabin Fever was full of obvious references to The Evil Dead, The Hills Have Eyes, etc. and if he’s been watching the cannibal classics he’s had to have picked up on one defining connection between all of them: grue, blood, and gore galore. In addition to the photo that’s been released from Roth about the film, the MPAA has officially labeled the film “Aberrant.”

NEW OFFICIAL POSTER FOR TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D

A few days ago we reported that, obviously, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D had received an ‘R’ rating from the MPAA. Now we have, as you can see from the teaser above, the official poster for the film. It looks like they’ve apparently decided to title it TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D, dropping the “THE” and “MASSACRE” for some reason. The “THE” I can understand, but everyone loves a good “MASSACRE.”

First Still From Texas Chainsaw 3D

Twenty years ago, the town of Newt, Texas exacted vengeance on the Sawyer family for their role in assisting and concealing murders committed by the chainsaw-wielding maniac Jeb Sawyer, aka “Leatherface.” The entire family was presume killed when Burt Hartman led the townspeople to burn down their farm house, but the Sawyer infant survived and was secretly taken away by two of the vigilante townies, Gavin and Arlene, and raised their daughter Heather. It’s not until she’s in her twenties that Heather learns that she’s adopted.

A lawyer for her grandmother tracks her down with word she’s been left an inheritance. Angry at her parents for lying to her, she sets out for Texas on a road trip with her boyfriend Ryan, friends Nikki and Kenny, and Darryl, a hitchhiker they pick up on the way.”

SURPRISE, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D GETS AN R RATING

Of course it shouldn’t be a surprise, but news has come down the wire that the MPAA has (thankfully) given THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D an “R” by the MPAA for “strong, grisly violence and language throughout.” Produced by Millenium Studios, presently, Lionsgate is aiming to release the film on January 4th, 2013. Now that the film has been given a rating, rumors are a’rumblin’ that a trailer may be coming soon.

Directed by John Luessenhop from a screenplay by Adam Marcus, Debra Sullivan and Kirsten Elms, the new film – a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s first film, co-written by Hooper and Kim Henkel- stars Alexandra Daddario, Tania Raymonde, Sue Rock, Scott Eastwood, Bill Moseley, Gunnar Hansen, Trey Songz, Keram Malicki-Sanchez, Shaun Sipos, Thom Barry, Paul Rae and Richard Riehle.

Although the fall 2012 release doesn’t seem like it’s going to be met (no matter WHAT the nifty poster says), I’d say we’ll probably hearing a lot more about THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 3D as the Halloween season approaches.

From the Press Release
Perhaps the most terrifying human relationship is the one between a serial killer and his target. But what if it starts that way and becomes something…more? From the visionary mind of director Jennifer Lynch (Boxing Helena, Surveillance, Hisss) comes the dark fable Chained, coming to Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD October 2nd from Anchor Bay Films. With a stellar cast including Vincent D’Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Men In Black, “Law and Order: Criminal Intent”), Gina Phillips (Jeepers Creepers, “Ally McBeal”), Conor Leslie (“90210”), and Evan Bird (“The Killing”) with Jake Weber (Dawn of the Dead, “Medium”) and Julia Ormand (My Week With Marilyn, “Mad Men,” The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Chained is an unforgettable ride into the darkness that can reside in the human heart – no matter what your age. The Chained Blu-ray™ Combo Pack and DVD also includes, as a bonus feature, the scene that prompted the MPAA to give the film an NC-17 rating! SRP is $26.98 for the DVD, and $29.99 for the Blu-ray™ Combo Pack.

Coming home from a routine trip to the movies, eight-year-old Tim (Bird) and his mother, Sarah (Ormond), are picked up by a psychopathic cab driver named Bob (D’Onofrio). It ends up being their last ride together. Bob murders the young boy’s mother and keeps Tim as his unwilling protégé, making him clean up the mess following each murder he commits. After a couple of aborted escape attempts, Bob chains Tim – now renamed Rabbit – allowing just enough length to move freely within the house. As the years pass, Bob starts instructing Rabbit, teaching him anatomy and human behavior. Now a teenager, Rabbit (Eamon Farren, X: Night of Vengeance) is slowly being pressed by Bob to start his own homicidal spree. Slowly but surely, he must soon choose whether to follow in Bob’s serial killer footsteps or make one final, desperate attempt to break free…

Bonus features on Chained Blu-ray™ and DVD include feature-length audio commentary by writer/director Jennifer Lynch and actor Vincent D’Onofrio; the alternate unrated version of “Mary’s Murder;” and the original theatrical trailer.

JENNIFER LYNCH’S CHAINED COMING TO DVD & BLU-RAY

Jennifer Lynch’s new film CHAINED, starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Julia Ormond, Jake Weber, Eamon Farren, Conor Leslie, and Evan Bird, and recently hit with an NC-17 rating from the masters of censorship, the MPAA, is making it’s way this October to Blu-ray and DVD.

So the Blu-ray/DVD combo release isn’t even going to be the uncut NC-17 version? They’re just including what they cut in bonus features instead of adding it back into the film? That doesn’t make any sense. One of the great things about home media is that you can release stuff UNRATED! Maybe Jennifer Lynch didn’t get that memo. A shame, but I’m still going to be checking it out as it sounds like one incredibly fucked up film.

RAIMI’S ‘DRAG ME TO HELL’ DEFINITELY PG-13

Posted on 23rd April 2009 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , , ,

I’m curious as to why anyone is surprised that DRAG ME TO HELL is going to be rated PG-13.  Wasn’t that the way it was intended since news broke on the story?  According to the MPAA, the film will definitely be rated PG-13.
