Keep checking back here, boils ‘n ghouls, for more information on THE TALL MAN as it develops and a review when we finally get to feast our eyes upon it.

POTENTIAL RELEASE DATE SET FOR LAUGIER’S ‘THE TALL MAN’

The first question potentially on your minds boils ‘n ghouls is what the hell I’m talking about when I mention THE TALL MAN. Well, unfortunately, let’s clear away any notion that it has anything to do with PHANTASM‘s Angus Scrimm. No, the titular character I’m referring to here is the title of the first English language film debut from MARTYRS director Pascal Laugier who also penned the screenplay. Since the project was first announced in 2010, it’s been flying somewhat under the radar until recently while making the various festival (SXSW for example) and film market rounds receiving mixed reviews.

Early reports have stated that, as opposed to a gory spectacle of horror we’d expect from Laugier, he has attempted to focus more on creating a psychological thriller (I shudder whenever I use that description of a film) reminiscent of early (as in his first film) M. Night Shyamalan films, focusing more upon dread and atmosphere. Frankly, I applaud this course of action as too many directors these days carry their films upon gore alone, leaving story by the wayside in favor of guts ‘n grue.  Personally I’m a fan of both in perfect combination so it will be interesting to see where Laugier will take us.

We may just get our chance as the fan site Jessica Biel Central reports that producer Kevin DeWalt has confirmed an August 31st release for the film, which stars Biel who is also serving as co-producer. Image Entertainment, however, has yet to offer any official word on the matter so this may simply be speculation. The film also stars Stephen McHattie (The Covenant, Pontypool), William B. Davis (The X-Files), Kyle Harrison Breitkopf, Samantha Ferris, and Katherine Ramdeen.

SYNOPSIS (if you’re still reading):

Cold Rock, USA – A darkness hovers upon the town. Children have gone missing over the years, leaving neither a clue nor a witness. Superstitious locals talk of The Tall Man, a legendary, mysterious dark figure who takes children away, never to be seen again.

Julia (Jessica Biel) is a nurse living in Cold Rock who doesn’t believe in legends. Until one night, waking up with an eerie feeling, she goes to her son’s bedroom and finds his bed empty. Rushing downstairs, she stops dead in her tracks: A huge dark figure stands in the entrance holding her son, David. Driven by pure instinct, Julia rushes after them, willing to do whatever it takes to get her son back. The chase is on and with it the quest for answers. Who is The Tall Man? What becomes of the children?
