FIRST POSTER HITS THE WEB FOR DARIO ARGENTO’S DRACULA 3D

Argentos Dracula 3D Banner

When I first heard the news that Dario Argento was going to be directing a 3D Dracula film, I was overjoyed. Thrilled, you might even say, but then I saw the trailer and all of my expectations, hopes, and dreams went right down the drain. I’m still going to give it a chance, however. I mean, come on, it’s Dario fucking Argento! If anything, he has done enough to deserve a chance, even with that awfully, horribly, frighteningly bad trailer (see it after the break IF YOU DARE!). Entertainment Weekly got their claws on the first poster to come out for the film and I honestly like it. It reminds me a little of the Hammer posters from the 60’s and 70’s. The classics are there: the voluptuous woman right out front, with the creepy fanged visage of Dracula, and let’s not forget the gothic castle. With any luck, the trailer is just an example of a bad trailer cobbler or, who knows, maybe it was done on purpose for camp value. We’ll never really know until we get a look at the film itself. If the poster is any example of things to come, I’m hopeful.

RELEASE DATE AND BLU-RAY ART REVEALED FOR MANIAC REMAKE

Maniac_Banner_51012

IFC has given a release date and art design for Franck Khalfoun’s MANIAC REMAKE, starring Elijah Wood and written by Alexandre Aja and Gregory Levasseur. Thomas Langmann, Aja, Levasseur and Lustig produced the remake, while Antoine de Cazotte, Daniel Delume, Andrew W. Garroni, Pavlina Hatoupis and Alix Taylor are attached as executive producers. The film, which has already been playing festivals, a limited theatrical run, and a successful VOD release, will be released on October 15th on both DVD and Bluray. That’s the good news. The bad news is the art design for the DVD/Blu-Ray cover. Given the incredible minimalist art that we were given with the poster, it seems as though IFC chose to overlook artistic merit for the standard photoshopped floating head scenario we’ve all come to loathe.

THE MUCH BETTER OFFICIAL ITALIAN TRAILER FOR DARIO ARGENTO’S DRACULA 3D

So far, we here at Backwoods Horror haven’t really said much…well, anything on Dario Argento’s DRACULA 3D. Why? Who knows. It probably has a lot to do with us, for some reason, not hearing about it until now. In all the horror news out there, we’ve overlooked the next DARIO ARGENTO film. Well, all that’s about to be corrected.

Here’s what we do know thanks to Daily Dead:

Dario Argento’s DRACULA 3D screened earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival and we’ve been waiting to hear about the movie’s US release plans. It is now being reported that the film has been acquired for US distribution. IFC Films has picked up the movie for its IFC Midnight label, according to Fangoria. While a specific release date has not been set, expect it some time in 2013 and we’ll have more release details in the very near future.

DRACULA 3D was directed by Dario Argento and stars Thomas Kretschmann (Dracula), Marta Gastini (Mina), Asia Argento (Lucy), Unax Ugalde (Harker), and Rutger Hauer (Van Helsing).

SYNOPSIS:

The tale begins with Jonathan Harker, journeying by train and carriage from England to Count Dracula’s crumbling, remote castle situated in the Carpathian Mountains on the border of Transylvania. The purpose of his mission is to catalogue the big library of Dracula. At first enticed by Dracula’s gracious manner, Harker soon discovers that he has become a prisoner in the castle. He also begins to see disquieting facets of Dracula’s nocturnal life. One night while searching for a way out of the castle, and against Dracula’s strict admonition not to venture outside his room at night, Harker falls under the spell of three wanton female vampires, the Brides of Dracula.

Finally, director Rodney Ascher has brought us an in-depth documentary on the making and history behind Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece THE SHINING. With any luck, we’ll finally get to find out all the details behind the making of a film that not only faced difficulties in the making but was considered somewhat cursed as well. Be sure to check out the trailer after the break.

CHECK OUT THIS FRIGHTENING CLIP FROM IFC MIDNIGHT’S ‘RITES OF SPRING’

IFC Midnight & Padraig Reynolds’ creature feature RITES OF SPRING will be released on VOD July 27, alongside a limited theatrical release at New York City’s IFC Center. I initially thought it was going to be just another kidnap-torture-kill kind of flick (don’t get me wrong, I dig those kinds of films, but we’ve recently been inundated with quite a few of them). And then…then I found out there was going to be a monster in addition to the kidnap-torture-kill aspect. I’m a sucker for creature features, so I decided to check out the official site, and now all I can say is that I’m incredibly excited to see it. Now we’ve recently come across a clip from the film. Check it out below!

SYNOPSIS:

Starring AJ Bowen (THE SIGNALHOUSE OF THE DEVIL) and Anessa Ramsey (YELLOWBRICKROADTHE SIGNAL), a group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school in the middle of the woods. But feelings of guilt soon overtake them, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy. The evening further spirals out of control when their poorly chosen hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices!

Additionally, it will also feature creature design by Aaron Sims (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: THE DREAM CHILDWRONG TURNTHE MISTI AM LEGENDCLASH OF THE TITANS, & THE THING) and  makeup effects artist Toby Sells.
