Ti West has been hit and miss in my book when it comes to his horror filmmaking, THE ROOST was ok for a first project, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is amazing , THE INNKEEPERS is…meh, and his segment in V/H/S…well, other than two chicks killin’ a guy, I didn’t see the point so that might be all on me. So while Ti West is an up and coming talent when it comes to the horror genre, he does tend to miss the mark at times; but when he hits that mark, he blows it away and you can see, as his films progress, how he’s still sort of developing his talent.
His next planned work, according to Variety, is a project nothing is currently known about titled SACRAMENT, except that the film will be produced by Eli Roth. This from Variety:
Worldview Entertainment has come on board to finance and produce Ti West’s horror thriller, “The Sacrament.” The logline is being kep under wraps for “The Sacrament,” which will begin shooting late this month in Georgia.
Eli Roth has been set to present and produce with Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow and Worldview chief operating officer Molly Conners alongside Jacob Jaffke and Peter Phok. Worldview’s Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Hoyt David Morgan will exec produce alongside Eric Newman, Ti West and IM Global CEO Stuart Ford.
“I’ve been a Ti West fan since his first film and have watched him continue to grow into one of the smartest and most exciting filmmakers working today. We want to make this Ti’s first mainstream movie, without sacrificing the quality and unflinching horror of the subject matter. And I’m thrilled to once again partner with Worldview Entertainment, as they fully appreciate what we bring to the project and are letting us run wild with it,” said Roth
Here’s a little something you may or may not be aware of when it comes to the films of Eli Roth, I hate them. I hate them immensely. I think CABIN FEVER was derivative as hell, and his HOSTEL films were just gore flicks with no real point to them other than gore for gore’s sake which, other than a showcase for practical effects, are simply boring. Additionally, all of his films are poorly written, with juvenile characters you can’t relate to unless you’re an asshole.
This being said, he hasn’t done such a terrible job when it comes to producing. He seems to allow the filmmakers to do exactly what they want to do without stepping in and taking the reigns as some production companies will often do. I really enjoyed, for example, THE LAST EXORCISM, a film that didn’t seem to have Roth’s vision overtake it at all. In fact, though I know he’s going to continue making films such as his upcoming THE GREEN INFERNO (another potentially derivative work of films like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or CANNIBAL FEROX aka MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY), I feel as though his true calling is, perhaps, as a producer.
I say this because though I can’t stand his films, I do appreciate Roth’s love of the genre and his respect for other horror filmmakers and their artistic vision. He has thus far made a fantastic producer, far better than his work as a writer/director, so I actually look forward to THE SACRAMENT and his work with Ti West. I have a feeling that Roth will allow West to create the film he wishes to make, regardless of what he said about bringing West into the “mainstream.” We’ll see.
