JOHN DIES AT THE END GETS A NEW RETRO PAINTED POSTER

It’s been a while since we’ve heard news about Don Coscarelli’s (PHANTASMBUBBA HO-TEP) adaptation JOHN DIES AT THE ENDbeing released by MAGNET RELEASING on demand December 27th and hitting theaters January 25th, 2013. Recently, however, Magnet has released an amazing retro-style poster for the film. Yes, yes, I loathe using the term “retro,” but it has been some time since a film has had a fully painted poster released. Why are we consistently inundated with floating heads against some photoshopped background when movie posters should always, ALWAYS be painted works of art worthy of hanging on your wall.

The film stars Paul Giamatti (who executive produced with Daniel Carey), Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Doug Jones.

SYNOPSIS:

Paul Giamatti plays Arnie, a shadowy figure investigating a street drug known as Soy Sauce. Promising an out-of-body experience with each hit, Soy Sauce causes users to drift across time and dimensions. But some who come back are no longer human.

Suddenly a silent otherworldly invasion is underway, and mankind needs a hero. What it gets instead is John and Dave (Mayes and Williamson), a pair of college dropouts who can barely hold down jobs. Can these two stop the oncoming horror in time to save humanity?  No. No, they can’t.

MAGNET ACQUIRES WORLDWIDE DISTRIBUTION RIGHTS TO DON COSCARELLI’S JOHN DIES AT THE END

Don Coscarelli’s (PHANTASM, BUBBA HO-TEP) JOHN DIES AT THE END has been picked up for worldwide distribution rights by Magnet Releasing, the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures. This is exciting news for genre fans who’ve been waiting to see this film for some time.

FROM THE PRESS RELEASE:

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing, genre arm of Magnolia Pictures, has announced they have acquired worldwide rights to JOHN DIES AT THE END, a phantasmagoric new sci-fi/horror film directed, produced and written for the screen by auteur and cult legend Don Coscarelli (Bubba Ho-Tep, the Phantasm series). Starring Paul Giamatti (who executive produced with Daniel Carey), Chase Williamson, Rob Mayes, Clancy Brown, Glynn Turman and Doug Jones, the film was also produced by M3 Creative’s Brad Baruh, Andy Meyers and Roman Perez. It is based on the bestselling book by David Wong.

JOHN DIES AT THE END premiered as a work in progress at this year’s Sundance film festival, kicking off an impressive festival run that included SXSW and the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival, where the final cut of the film will premiere as the closing night film of Midnight Madness. Magnet will release the film this year through its Ultra VOD program, debuting it on all VOD platforms in late December, with a theatrical release to follow in early 2013.

“We are longtime fans of the great Don Coscarelli and fell in love with this film when it debuted at Sundance,” said Magnolia/Magnet President Eamonn Bowles. “It’s a real head trip—imaginative, wildly funny and incredibly demented with all the makings of an underground classic that fans will come back to again and again.”

Coscarelli adds, “It is my great pleasure to be allied with the finest and most entrepreneurial independent film distributor in the terrific team at Magnolia Pictures. They share my passion for the story of Dave and John…Obviously the “Soy Sauce” that kicks the plot into gear has had the same addictive effect on them as it did me. Watch out!”

NEW POSTER AND STILLS FOR DON COSCARELLI’S ‘JOHN DIES AT THE END’

Man oh man it sounds like this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is going to be a hoot ‘n a half, particularly the Midnight Madness series. Another film added to the Midnight Madness lineup is Don Coscarelli’s (PHANTASM, BUBBA HO-TEP) latest and greatest film: JOHN DIES AT THE END. News on the film hasn’t been incredibly forthcoming (That…or I haven’t been paying attention. I suppose I could always read the book…), but what I HAVE heard is all good news boils ‘n ghouls.

Speaking of boils ‘n ghouls, the folk over at Bloody Disgusting got their rotted claws on the newest poster for the film out of a series featuring weapons the protagonists will be using throughout; this one featuring a MacGyvered paintball/propane/flamethrower from hell. Bitchin’. Check it out below, and check after the break for some new stills from the film as well!

PERLMAN IS ELVIS IN ‘BUBBA NOSFERATU’

I still don’t know why the fuck Bruce Campbell bowed out of playing Elvis in the upcoming BUBBA NOSFERATU, the sequel to BUBBA HO-TEP, but hell, if you’re gonna get someone else, Perlman’s a damn good choice.  I’m sure with makeup, they’ll get him lookin’ like Elvis, but I’m mostly stoked about the choice due to sheer overall talent.  Ron Perlman is a fantastically talented character actor who really has the ability to take a role and run with it.  I look forward to what he does with the roll.

Also staring Paul Giamatti
