‘MY NAME IS BRUCE’ SEQUEL DEFINITE

Posted on 26th January 2010 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , ,

Saw this post from the Chin himself, Mr. Bruce Campbell, over at Ain’t It Cool News.  This could be either a good thing, or a very, VERY bad thing.  Either way, I’m a BC mark.  I’ll be watching it!

Hello everyone. Bruce Campbell here. This urgent message is short, because my keystrokes are monitored and I fear for my life. My partner at Dark Horse comics, Mike Richardson (normally a very rational and talented man), threatened to have his foot soldiers “crush my spleen” if I did what I am about to do. But the fans deserve to know, so with great trepidation I officially announce Bruce Vs. Frankenstein, the sequel to My Name is Bruce. Principal photography begins this fall in Oregon. I’d like to live long enough to see the cameras roll, so please, for the love of God, do not tell anyone – I can’t risk this announcement getting back to Mike! Thank you.

“DRAG ME TO HELL” REVIEW: POLISHED EVIL DEAD

Posted on 8th June 2009 by aaron in Reviews - Tags: , , , , , ,

I’m going back and forth on this one.  On the one hand, I like it, on the other, it just seems too damn slick for a Raimi horror flick.  When I hear of Raimi’s triumphant return to horror, I expect gritty, grimy violence.  Don’t get me me wrong, DRAG ME TO HELL was a fucking rollercoaster ride of fun with definite Raimi-esque quality, but it just didn’t strike me how his past foray’s into horror have done.

Oh, yeah, shit, a synopsis for those of you who have been lazy fucks and haven’t gone to see the damn thing (stolen, obviously, because I’m lazy):

The film follows a loan officer (Alison Lohman) who is ordered to evict an old woman from her home and finds herself the recipient of a supernatural curse that turns her life into a living hell. Desperate, she turns to a seer to try and save her soul, while evil forces work to push her to a breaking point.
(Thanks to Bloody Disgusting who, in turn, stole it from IMDB)

A rathre brief synopsis, for sure, and one that doesn’t truly encapsulate the feeling of the film.  Rather dry, I’d say.
The film is definitely Raimi’s return to form, with the odd dutch angles, strange camera work, fantastic use of sound and imagery as only a master can do.  The flick is a fucking roller coaster ride.  Reminds me of something I read in Bruce Campbell’s autobiography “once the action/violence starts, NEVER EVER let up” and this flick delivers in spades.

The story was both simple and relatively refreshing given the glutton of absolute shit being pumped outtta the ‘ol Hollywood orifice these days and it was quite a welcomed relief.  I don’t believe I’ve had such fun at a horor flick in ages.

There were of course some issues.  Justin Long (the boyfriend) for example.  Who dug the mac guy up.  Motherfucker even says he hates CCR in the newest Die Hard movie.  Fuck him with a razorwire baseball bat to the ass for all I care.  I’ve seen soggy cardboard act better.  A shame because I kind of liked him in Jeepers Creepers.  Lohman did a fantastic job, finding a place between fear and downright ass-kicker a’la Bruce Campbell in the Evil Dead flicks.

While not a perfect movie, it is incredibly enjoyable and a recommend for all of you horror fiends looking for something new to bring to the table.  Watch this fucker TODAY!

Because of certain flaws and some stiff acting, DRAG ME TO HELL will be receiving the coveted 4 out of 5 skulls.  Good job, Sam…I expect more from your future efforts.  Fuck SpiderMan!4 Skulls Out Of 5

PERLMAN IS ELVIS IN ‘BUBBA NOSFERATU’

Posted on 3rd April 2009 by aaron in Indy News, News - Tags: , , , , ,

I still don’t know why the fuck Bruce Campbell bowed out of playing Elvis in the upcoming BUBBA NOSFERATU, the sequel to BUBBA HO-TEP, but hell, if you’re gonna get someone else, Perlman’s a damn good choice.  I’m sure with makeup, they’ll get him lookin’ like Elvis, but I’m mostly stoked about the choice due to sheer overall talent.  Ron Perlman is a fantastically talented character actor who really has the ability to take a role and run with it.  I look forward to what he does with the roll.

Also staring Paul Giamatti

REVIEW: ‘MY NAME IS BRUCE’

Posted on 18th February 2009 by aaron in Reviews - Tags: , , , , , ,

MY NAME IS BRUCE
Directed by: Bruce Campbell
Written by: Mark Verheiden
Starring: Bruce Campbell, Ted Raimi, Grace Thorsen, Taylor Sharpe

First, a synopsis from the Official Page at Bruce Campbell’s website:

My Name is Bruce is the heroic struggle of a small mining town (Gold Lick, Oregon) to rid itself of a vengeful monster. Guan-di (Jamie Peck), the Chinese god of war and protector of the dead, has been unleashed by cemetery desecrating teenagers to protect the graves of Chinese miners lost in a deadly cave-in of yesteryear.

The deadly demons mission is to eradicate all those who transgressed against the tomb (relatives included), which is virtually the entire population of Gold Lick. The inbred community has to find a solution so Jeff (Taylor Sharpe), the sole survivor of a deadly Guan-Di encounter, takes it upon himself to kidnap his idol, Bruce Campbell (Bruce Campbell), star of countless B-movie horror films, and recruit him to be their local savior.

Mortified at first, Bruce eventually goes along with Jeffs prank, convinced that its all an elaborate birthday present from his agent (Ted Raimi), and begins to enjoy the spoils of being a movie hero, including free liquor and Jeffs attractive mother, Kelly (Grace Thorsen).

But Jeffs scheme goes horribly wrong when his hero, known more for fighting directors than mythical warriors, haphazardly leads the town in battle against Guan-Di. Confronted by a monster thats not a guy in a rubber suit, and with the blood of innocents on his hands, Bruce abandons the harsh reality of Gold Lick for the sanctity of his former, artificial life.

In his ramshackle desert trailer, Bruce resumes the daily grind of genre sequels, poor housekeeping and cheap whiskey, but a gut-wrenching call from his biggest fan, Jeff – now forced to take on Guan-Di alone – prompts the actor to re-evaluate his destiny.

Against his better judgment (and the angry citizens of Gold Lick), Bruce returns to defeat Guan-Di, save Jeff, and snag his hot mother. In the climactic, mano-a-monster, Bruce tries to rise above the miserable, off-screen schmuck that he is and become a heroin real life.

Be afraid, Gold Lick be very afraid.

SO…what did I think?  Granted, I’m a bit biased as I’m a huge BC mark, but I actually went into the film thinking it was probably going to suck.  I had been extremely excited since I first heard of it’s conception and have reported on it repeatedly on the site.  Because of this, I was afraid of the hype and that, more than likely, the film wouldn’t live up to it.  So I popped it in and sat back with a cool glass of Catdaddy Carolina Moonshine mixed with some Mt. Dew and prepared myself for a terrible schlockfest.

What I got was a FANTASTIC SCHLOCKFEST!  This truly is THE Bruce Campbell movie.  For all of it’s flaws, I absolutely loved it.  I’m not going to call this a “low budget” movie, because it wasn’t by any means, but there were definite budget restrictions for the kind of flick they were trying to make.  I have yet to listen to the commentary track on it, though I’m sure it’ll be hilariously informative, so I’m not entirely sure if they were TRYING to make the movie look cheap or if it actually WAS cheap.  That works for this film, however, because if it had been an uberslick, Michael Bay-ish flick, it wouldn’t have worked at all.

Guan-di looked cheesy as all hell with the glowing eyes and crazy makeup and I loved Ted Raimi playing a multitude of shemp roles (a la ARMY OF DARKNESS).  I even noticed cameos by Timothy Patrick Quill (the Big Bald Blacksmith from Army Of Darkness) and Dan Hicks (Jake from Evil Dead 2) as gay rednecks.  They even made references to themselves in those other flicks, talking about how tough and dreamy Jake and The Blacksmith were.  HA!

I just loved the overall over-the-top corny nature of the movie.  It was a perfect satirical sendup of Bruce Campbell, the man, the actor, in a weird situation acting as just a regular guy (kind of like the recent JCVD).  It was funny where it was supposed to be funny, campy where it was supposed to be campy, and an overall good time.  This film is an absolute MUST for any fan of Bruce Campbell because, let’s face it, that’s who this film is marketed to.  But, as my girlfriend can attest to, it works even if your not a fan as an overall horror comedy in the vein of (but not as good as) Shaun Of The Dead.  A wonderful film.  Check it out!

‘ARMY OF DARKNESS’ BLU-RAY COMING SOON

Posted on 17th February 2009 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , , , , ,

Dubbed the “Screwhead Edition,” an Army of Darkness Blu-Ray will be coming to us soon now that rights for the film have reverted back to Universal.  This from Shock Till You Drop:

Now that the rights for Army of Darkness have reverted back to Universal (from Anchor Bay Entertainment), its home video division has announced a Blu-Ray “Screwhead Edition” for May 19th. Special features will include the alternate ending, deleted scenes, The Men Behind the Army featurette, extra footage, theatrical trailer and audio commentary with director Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Ivan Raimi. Exclusive to Blu-Ray: My Scenes, BD-Live and the ability to access production photos during the movie experience.

Another reason for me to look towards finally getting a Blu-Ray player.  I just have this…issue with Blu-Ray discs, the quality of the image onscreen.  Sometimes it looks like crystal clear film, absolutely stunning, and then, at times, it looks as though a high definition soap opera of sorts.  It’s weird how the image switches back and forth and absolutely ruins the viewing experience for me.  I’m not sure if it’s like this with older films, as I’ve only seen newer films in Blu-Ray.  We’ll see.  Wave of the Future and all that.

Interview With Bruce Campbell

Posted on 9th July 2008 by aaron in News - Tags: , , ,

Entertainment Weekly has an interview up with Bruce Campbell.  It all ties in somehow with the show Burn Notice, but the interviewer starts off with The Evil Dead and things keep going from there.  He talks with Bruce “Ash” Campbell about new dvd versions of The Evil Dead where it seems to be hinted that there may be another one or two, but not by Anchor Bay as their license is up.  The “Ultimate Edition” was sort of a last hurrah from Anchor Bay.  Personally, I won’t consider it an Ultimate Edition until it gets the 4 disc set treatment that Dawn Of the Dead did, and includes Within The Woods.  Sam Raimi has consistently stated that Within The Woods probably won’t make it onto a dvd release, but we’ll see.  Check out that interview.

As you may or may not know, I’m a big fan of Bruce Campbell, so when I first heard about the idea and synopsis behind My Name Is Bruce, I was stoked.  The synopsis on Bruce’s Website states:

“My Name is Bruce is the heroic struggle of a small mining town (Gold Lick, Oregon) to rid itself of a vengeful monster. Guan-di (Jamie Peck), the Chinese god of war and protector of the dead, has been unleashed by cemetery desecrating teenagers to protect the graves of Chinese miners lost in a deadly cave-in of yesteryear.

The deadly demon’s mission is to eradicate all those who transgressed against the tomb (relatives included), which is virtually the entire population of Gold Lick.

Mortified at first, Bruce eventually goes along with Jeff’s prank, convinced that it’s all an elaborate birthday present from his agent (Ted Raimi), and begins to enjoy the spoils of being a movie hero, including free liquor and Jeff’s attractive mother, Kelly (Grace Thorsen) very afraid.

But Jeff’s scheme goes horribly wrong when his hero, known more for fighting directors than mythical warriors, haphazardly leads the town in battle against Guan-Di. Confronted by a monster that’s not a guy in a rubber suit, and with the blood of innocents on his hands, Bruce abandons the harsh reality of Gold Lick for the sanctity of his former, artificial life.

In the climactic, mano-a-monster, Bruce tries to rise above the miserable, off-screen schmuck that he is and become a hero…in real life.

Be afraid, Gold Lick – be very afraid.”

Hilarious!  Fangoria has an interview up with Bruce where he talks a little more about My Name Is Bruce.  The movie is planned to be released October 2008 theatrically with a dvd release set for January 2009.  Can’t wait.

DVD Release of Sundown: The Vampire In Retreat

Posted on 30th June 2008 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , ,

Shock Until You Drop just released the DVD art and specs for the release of Sundown: The Vampire in Retreat.  I read about this flick in Bruce Campbell’s autobiography If Chins Could Kill, but have never seen it, mostly because it can’t really be found except maybe on VHS on ebay where copies have sold for as much as $100.  But now it’s going to be going into my netflix list when released on September 23rd.

The special features will include:
• Memories of Moab featurette (an all-new interview with Bruce Campbell)
• A Vampire Reformed featurette (all-new interview with David Carradine)
• The Making of Sundown featurette
• Audio commentary with director Anthony Hickox and director of photography Levie Isaacks
• Photo Gallery

According to Wikipedia: A colony of vampires takes over a ghost town of Purgatory, and under the leadership of Jozek Mardulak are developing a method of making artificial plasma. But another elder, Jefferson, who abhors the idea of vampires being anything other than predators, organizes a revolution. At the same time, a descendant of the original Abraham Van Helsing (played by Bruce Campbell) shows up, trying to fulfil his family “destiny.” David Carradine plays the lead Vampire named Jozek Mardulak.

Below you’ll find a “trailer” (made by a fan) I found on YouTube and the dvd art, as well as original poster art…
