“Benaroya Pictures and The Genre Company announced today they have set Samuel L. Jackson to co-star with John Cusack in the apocalyptic thriller CELL, based on the bestselling novel by Stephen King. Tod “Kip” Williams will direct, with production set to begin in January. Benaroya Pictures is financing.
Samuel L. Jackson most recently co-starred in last year’s Django Unchained and next appears in the upcoming filmsOldboy and Robocop as well as Captain America 2: Winter Soldier and The Avengers sequel. He is currently in production on Secret Service. In CELL, Jackson will play Tom McCourt, an engineer and former soldier who escapes from Boston along with Cusack’s character, Clay Riddell, after a mysterious pulse, transmitted by cell phones, spreads like a virus through the human population.
You might think “The Walking Dead” star is a natural badass with a crossbow, but you’d be wrong. Dead wrong.
On a recent episode of Conan, late-night host Conan O’Brien showed the audience hilarious early training footage of THE WALKING DEAD star Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) struggling with a crossbow. Why shoot a zombie in the head with an arrow, when you can just throw the entire crossbow at it instead?
I think it’s fairly obvious that we here at BackwoodsHorror are huge SCREAM FACTORY fans. A division of SHOUT! Factory, this company has been putting out some of the finest blu-ray editions of fan favorites for some time, reminding me of the glory days of Anchor Bay…perhaps even better. And now they’re releasing two of my favorite Kevin Tenney films: Witchboard, and perhaps my favorite, Night of the Demons on Blu-ray on February 4th, 2014. Check out the cover art and full specs after the break!
“The famed horror team of director James Wan (Saw, The Conjuring) and writer Leigh Whannell (Saw, Saw III) reunite with the original cast in the highly anticipated, spine-tingling follow-up INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2, debuting December 24 on Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Fans can delve deeper into “The Further” with more than an hour of bonus materials exclusive to the Blu-ray Combo Pack, including a three-part webisode called “Insidious: Spectral Sightings,” which gives an inside look at the business operations of Specs and Tucker from their early days as paranormal investigators through their investigation with Elise. Cast and crew highlights are also included in the three additional behind-the-scenes featurettes available exclusively on the Blu-ray Combo Pack, including a discussion about making INSIDIOUS 2 and what it was like to film at a haunted location. Fans can unlock secrets from this suspense thriller through two additional featurettes available on both the Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD. “Peripheral Vision: Behind the Scenes” takes fans onto the set of the film to see how it was created, and “Ghostly Transformation” follows the make-up effects used to create the ghosts in The Further.”
Making its debut this coming weekend at the Rock and Shock show in Worcester MA is the convention documentary FANTASM. The film takes an in depth and behind the scenes look at conventions and the people and celebrities that attend them. As any of us who attend conventions with any regularity can attest, there is nothing quite like the vibe of hanging out with a bunch of like minded horror geeks for an entire weekend and FANTASM attempts to bring a little of that experience home via DVD.
Holding the premiere at Rock and Shock isn’t an accident according to director Kyle Kuchta “Rock and Shock was the first convention I went to as a kid, and those experiences were the inspiration behind Fantasm. To be able to premiere the film there is an absolute honor.”
While showing what a great time a convention can be we are also treated to insight of some celebrities in attendance. The likes of Tom Atkins, Heather Langenkamp and Lloyd Kaufman share their views on conventions and those that attend. While certainly not the first documentary to attempt to capture the convention experience, early word is that this one is a notch above the rest. If you’re heading to Rock and Shock this weekend make it a priority to get in on this one. For the rest of us, I’m sure there is a DVD/Blu-ray announcement in our future.

Traumatized Marybeth (Danielle Harris) faces off against deformed psychopath Victor Crowley (Kane Hodder) once again in this gory sequel that finds director B.J. McDonnell taking over the reins from series originator Adam Green, who penned the screenplay. Having just turned Victor Crowley’s head into raw hamburger with a point-blank shotgun blast, tormented heroine Marybeth must once more fight for her life when the deformed maniac resurrects yet again. Fortunately for Marybeth, a well-placed chainsaw rips Crowley clean in two, allowing her the opportunity to make her way to the closest police station, where Sheriff Fowler (Zach Galligan) is contending with drunken Mardi Gras revelers. Drenched in blood and carrying Crowley’s scalp, Marybeth is quickly hosed down and locked up in a cell. As Sheriff Fowler heads to Honey Island Swamp with his best men to investigate, his ex-wife, disgraced reporter Amanda (Caroline Williams) convinces Deputy Winslow (Robert Diago DoQui) to let her question Marybeth. Meanwhile in the swamp, Crowley descends upon the first responders tasked with cleaning up the shocking scene. With half the force heading in as back-up, Amanda realizes that they key to defeating Crowley may lie in his father’s remains, and talks Deputy Winslow into bringing Marybeth along as they head to a nearby town to retrieve them. By the time Amanda, Deputy Winslow, and Marybeth arrive in the swamp to confront Crowley, the madman has already massacred most of the police as well as a heavily armed swat team led by the fearless Hawes (Derek Mears). Should their bold plan fail, the trio will certainly die horribly. With no options left, they venture into the darkness to confront the legend that never dies.
