‘I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE’ REMAKE? UH…WHY?

Posted on 18th February 2010 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

So this is the first time I’m hearing about a REMAKE of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE, the exceedingly visceral rape/revenge thriller directed by Meir Zarchi in 1978.  Also known as DAY OF THE WOMAN, the film follows a woman who has come to the country to work on her novel in peace and quiet, only to be violently assaulted and raped by a group of local yokels.  After healing a bit, she launches into a campaign of vicious revenge against her attackers (including cutting off one guy’s dong!).

As hard as the original film is for me to watch (because of the rape/assault part that seems to last FOREVER), I’m certain that I’ll be having a more difficult time trying to watch the remake (because, obviously, it’s going to suck).  This version is directed by Steven R. Monroe and stars Sarah Butler, Daniel Franzese, Chad Lindberg, Rodney Eastman and Andrew Howard.  I’m guessing the financing came through after the somewhat successful LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT remake happened as I really can’t see how a remake of a film such as I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE could get produced.  Of course we all know that this flick is going to FAIL.  The original was made at a specific time, when exploitation flicks were synonymous with independent filmmaking.

On top of that, Anchor Bay has agreed to put the remake out this fall in a targeted (read: limited) theatrical release!? To be followed by DVD release early 2011.  Really Anchor Bay?  Really?  I remember the days when I worshiped at the DVD alter of Anchor Bay, in the early days of DVD releases when they were putting out all the great horror classics.  Now I have THIS.  Ah well, it’s business, but a remake of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE will not only suck balls, but it’s really something more apt for a Brain Damage release.

‘DESCENT 2′ COMING TO U.S. DVD FROM LIONSGATE

Here’s a plot synopsis for Descent 2:
Emerging from the cave system alone, distraught and covered in the blood of her missing companions, Sarah is incoherent and half-wild with fear. Skeptical about her account of events and convinced Sarah’s psychosis hides far darker secrets, Sheriff Vaines doesn’t waste time. Along with his partner Rios, and their cave rescue team Dan, Greg, and Cath, Vaines forces Sarah back into the caves to help the rescuers find her friends.

This from the boils ‘n ghouls over at STYD:

Lionsgate Home Entertainment announced it’s releasing the sequel on April 27. Here’s a look at the cover art; stay tuned for more specific details as they come in. Click on the title for pics, trailers and more.

Update: Fangoria got a listing of the special features which will include audio commentary by Harris and actresses MacDonald, Krysten Cummings and Anna Skellern, deleted scenes, “The Making of THE DESCENT: PART 2: Deeper and Darker” featurette, storyboards.

UPCOMING MOVIE REVIEWS: THE BOOGENS, INTO THE PIT, THE WOLFMAN, POOR PRETTY EDDIE

Posted on 17th February 2010 by aaron in News, Personal - Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

This week I’ll be posting reviews for THE BOOGENS, INTO THE PIT: THE SHOCKING TRUE STORY OF DEADPIT.COM, THE WOLFMAN, and POOR PRETTY EDDIE.  The first is an old favorite from the early 80’s that hasn’t yet made it to (legitimate) DVD release.  INTO THE PIT is a documentary about the DeadPit Horror Talk Radio boys The Creepy Kentuckian and Uncle Bill.  THE WOLFMAN was just fucking godawful and I will pull no punches.  Finally, POOR PRETTY EDDIE falls within what you could call Hicksploitation and, being that this is BackwoodsHorror.com, I’m going to start reviewing quite a few flicks within this genre.  Stay tuned!

‘SUICIDE GIRLS MUST DIE’

Posted on 14th February 2010 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Sparse deadline, I know, but it got yer attention.  I thought about putting a question mark after that title, because, after all, who’d wanna hurt those tender young girls who want nothing more than make the world a better place…with TITTIES!  WHOOOOO!  Ahem, anyway, SUICIDE GIRLS MUST DIE is the title of an upcoming movie directed by Sawa Suicide (obviously a suicide girly herself, the only pic I could find of her you’ll find below).  Also below, you’ll find the teaser poster (first glimpsed over at AICN) and a teaser trailer.

SUICIDE GIRLS MUST DIE Synopsis:
When Missy and Sawa invite twelve of their favorite Suicide Girls to a remote cabin in Maine to shoot a calendar video, none of the models had any idea they planned to shoot the Suicide Girl version of a horror movie. At first Bailey and then Evan go missing and the idyllic vacation photoshoot quickly degenerates into a chaotic nightmare for the models who each think they could be next to disappear.

Now for the Goods:

And, finally, the elusive Sawa Suicide:

Seriously, that was the best pic I could find of the woman!  Ah well, fitting as she’s the director.  And now, for you kiddies disappointed in the overall lack of titties in this post, take a sweet (NSFW) gander after the cut (SUICIDE GIRLS MUST NEVER DIE!):

LIONSGATE TO RELEASE ‘THE LAST EXORCISM’ (FORMERLY KNOWN AS ‘COTTON’)

Posted on 14th February 2010 by aaron in News - Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Source: Shock Till You Drop

I hadn’t really heard much about the Exorcist-meets-Blair Witch flick COTTON.  I happened upon this little story while browsing Shock Till You Drop:

Lionsgate has picked up the US distribution rights for the Eli Roth produced horror thriller The Last Exorcism (formally titled Cotton).

Helmed by German director Daniel Stamm, the cinema-verite style pic stars Patrick Fabian as a troubled evangelical minister who allows his final exorcism to be filmed by a documentary crew. (It’s the “found footage” formula with an exorcism.)

“It’s always great to work with our friend Eli, who has played a key role in establishing Lionsgate in the vanguard of the horror genre,” said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate’s prexy of acquisitions and co-productions. “The Last Exorcism feels as close to a real exorcism as anyone would ever want to get — audiences are going to find this movie scary as, well, hell.”

The Last Exorcism will premiere next month at SXSW in Austin, Texas. We’ll keep you posted on an official release date as soon as one is locked down.

With any luck, Eli Roth hasn’t tainted this flick by producing it.  I’d hate to see a director fail because his film wasn’t the way Lionsgate’s “good friend Eli” wanted it to turn out (i.e. shitcakes).

MARCH NO LONGER THE ‘SEASON OF THE WITCH’

LionsGate has decided to pull the Nicholas Cage starring SEASON OF THE WITCH from its March 19th release date, according to Variety:

The minimajor hasn’t yet set a new launch date for “Witch,” which also stars Ron Perlman, Ulrich Thomsen, Stephen Campbell Moore, Stephen Graham and newcomer Claire Foy.

“We’re looking for the best release date,” said a spokeswoman on Friday.

“Season of the Witch,” directed by Dominic Sena from Bragi Schut’s script, centers on 14th Century knights transporting a girl suspected of being the witch who has spread the Black Plague.

BIG BAD WOLVES ATTACK IN ‘THE GREY’

Ok, this sounds like absolute shit.  Really, who cares about killer wolves?  I mean, so far, there doesn’t seem to be anything remotely supernatural about the whole mess, so, who fucking cares, really?  You?  Well, get outta my shack! This is what Shock Till You Drop had to say:

Variety is reporting today The A-Team’s helmer Joe Carnahan (also of Smokin’ Aces) is jumping into a man versus nature thriller. He’s set to direct The Grey which, get this, tells of plane crash survivors who are hunted by a pack of wolves.

Bradley Cooper (also seen in this summer’s A-Team) is set to star for producers Ridley and Tony Scott.
