SYNOPSIS:

Texas Chainsaw 3D’continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family – or so they thought.

Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

ROBERT HALL’S LIGHTNING BUG HEADING TO BLU-RAY!

While it’s not exactly a horror film, I absolutely love Robert Hall’s LIGHTNING BUG. Makeup FX artist Robert Hall is perhaps been best-known as the director of his ultragory LAID TO REST movies, but he launched his filmmaking career with the less gory, but still genre-friendly LIGHTNING BUG, a film I still consider to be his masterpiece.

From Fangoria:

LIGHTNING BUG hits hi-def disc January 15, 2013 from Image Entertainment in the U.S. and Anchor Bay in Canada, and will be chock full of previously unseen features. Most notably, Hall tells us, “In addition to the theatrical cut, the disc will include an ‘Extended Cut’ that has never been seen before. It contains an entire subplot with Don Gibb in a hilarious role that was cut from the [previous] Anchor Bay version for time. We’re also working on a retrospective with all-new interviews with the key players that we’re hoping to include if we can get it done in time.”

As for the movie itself, “It has been completely remastered and restored from the original print and color-corrected for Blu-ray, supervised my myself and DP Brandon Trost. We also fixed and enhanced some visual effects shots now that we have that luxury. It has never looked this good.”

DEAD BEFORE DAWN 3D HAS BEEN PICKED UP FOR U.S. DISTRIBUTION!

Fantastic news as April Mullen’s DEAD BEFORE DAWN 3D  has been picked up for US distribution by Gaiam Vivendi Entertainment, though no release date has been announced.

DEAD BEFORE DAWN 3D follows an unwitting group of college kids who accidentally unleash an evil curse that causes people to kill themselves and turn into Zombie Demons, aka Zemons. The horror/comedy starring Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future) and Devon Bostick (Diary of a Wimpy Kids series) has been gaining a lot of momentum and has a tone that some are describing as Shaun of the Dead meets The Goonies.

DEAD BEFORE DAWN 3D was shot from start to finish in Stereoscopic 3D, making it the first live-action, fully Canadian Stereoscopic 3D feature. Not only that, director April Mullen, from Niagara Falls, is now the youngest and only woman ever to direct a film of this kind.

The film is set to release in late fall. It was written by Tim Doiron, who also produces with Mullen.

SYNOPSIS:

A monstrous creature terrorizes a 19th Century European village by moonlight and a young man struggles to protect his loved ones from an unspeakable scourge in Werewolf: The Beast Among Us, Universal Studios’ all-new addition to its time-honored legacy of classic monsters. During his studies with the local doctor (Stephen Rea), Daniel (Guy Wilson) witnesses the horrific consequences of werewolf attacks. Watching as the beast’s fearsome reputation draws bounty hunters, thrill seekers and charlatans to the tiny town, Daniel dreams of destroying the ruthless predator. So when a mysterious stranger (Ed Quinn) and his team of skilled werewolf hunters (Stephen Bauer, Adam Croasdell) arrive to pursue the monster, he offers to join them, despite his mother’s (Nia Peeples) protests. But it soon becomes clear that this creature is stronger, smarter and more dangerous than anything they have faced before. As casualties mount and villagers see their neighbors transformed into ravening monsters, the townsfolk take up arms against each other to find the true identity of the werewolf. Amid the hysteria, Daniel begins to suspect he’s closer to his target than he ever dreamed.

TI WEST HAS SOLD HIS SOUL TO WORK WITH ELI ROTH ON THE SACRAMENT

Ti West has been hit and miss in my book when it comes to his horror filmmaking, THE ROOST was ok for a first project, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL is amazing , THE INNKEEPERS is…meh, and his segment in V/H/S…well, other than two chicks killin’ a guy, I didn’t see the point so that might be all on me. So while Ti West is an up and coming talent when it comes to the horror genre, he does tend to miss the mark at times; but when he hits that mark, he blows it away and you can see, as his films progress, how he’s still sort of developing his talent.

His next planned work, according to Variety, is a project nothing is currently known about titled SACRAMENT, except that the film will be produced by Eli Roth. This from Variety:

Worldview Entertainment has come on board to finance and produce Ti West’s  horror thriller, “The Sacrament.” The logline is being kep under wraps for “The Sacrament,” which will begin shooting late this month in Georgia.

Eli Roth has been set to present and produce with Worldview CEO Christopher Woodrow and Worldview chief operating officer Molly Conners alongside Jacob Jaffke and Peter Phok. Worldview’s Maria Cestone, Sarah Johnson Redlich and Hoyt David Morgan will exec produce alongside Eric Newman, Ti West and IM Global CEO Stuart Ford.

“I’ve been a Ti West fan since his first film and have watched him continue to grow into one of the smartest and most exciting filmmakers working today. We want to make this Ti’s first mainstream movie, without sacrificing the quality and unflinching horror of the subject matter. And I’m thrilled to once again partner with Worldview Entertainment, as they fully appreciate what we bring to the project and are letting us run wild with it,” said Roth

Here’s a little something you may or may not be aware of when it comes to the films of Eli Roth, I hate them. I hate them immensely. I think CABIN FEVER was derivative as hell, and his HOSTEL films were just gore flicks with no real point to them other than gore for gore’s sake which, other than a showcase for practical effects, are simply boring. Additionally, all of his films are poorly written, with juvenile characters you can’t relate to unless you’re an asshole.

This being said, he hasn’t done such a terrible job when it comes to producing. He seems to allow the filmmakers to do exactly what they want to do without stepping in and taking the reigns as some production companies will often do. I really enjoyed, for example, THE LAST EXORCISM, a film that didn’t seem to have Roth’s vision overtake it at all. In fact, though I know he’s going to continue making films such as his upcoming THE GREEN INFERNO (another potentially derivative work of films like CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST or CANNIBAL FEROX aka MAKE THEM DIE SLOWLY), I feel as though his true calling is, perhaps, as a producer.

I say this because though I can’t stand his films, I do appreciate Roth’s love of the genre and his respect for other horror filmmakers and their artistic vision. He has thus far made a fantastic producer, far better than his work as a writer/director, so I actually look forward to THE SACRAMENT and his work with Ti West. I have a feeling that Roth will allow West to create the film he wishes to make, regardless of what he said about bringing West into the “mainstream.” We’ll see. Keep your bloodshot eyes peeled boils ‘n ghouls right here for more information as we receive it.

JOHN CARPENTER’S HALLOWEEN COMING BACK TO THEATERS THIS OCTOBER

EXCITING NEWS TODAY as we here at Backwoods Horror have learned, through our various web browsin’, that John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN is going to be coming back to theaters this OCTOBER!

FROM THE HALLOWEEN MOVIES FACEBOOK PAGE:

This October, John Carpenter’s immortal classic, HALLOWEEN, will be making a return to theaters nationwide. This will be the biggest run the film has had since shocking audiences in 1978, and makes for the perfect early kick-off to next year’s 35th Anniversary celebration.

Screening before the film will be YOU CAN’T KILL THE BOGEYMAN: 35 YEARS OF HALLOWEEN, a new mini-documentary written and directed by our own Justin Beahm, focusing on the undeniable impact the film (and series) has had on culture and the genre. The documentary will run at all screenings coast-to-coast.

More details will be posted soon over at HalloweenMovies.com, but before the press or anyone else found out, we wanted to share the news with you, the most amazing fans in cinema. Stay tuned!

I can’t wait to get more news about this re-release. Here’s hoping it’s some kind of 4K print and it’ll be one of those FATHOM events that show in every city and town cinema, and not just limited to we lucky few who live in the larger cities.

OFFICIAL POSTER AND PLOT DETAILS FOR TIFFANY SHEPIS STARRING MORNINGSIDE MONSTER

Independent film company Blue Dusk Productions announces the September production of the horror-thriller feature film THE MORNINGSIDE MONSTER, to be lensed in the greater Atlanta area. Director Chris Ethridge and writer Jayson Palmer, the dynamic team behind the 2011 award-winning adaptation of Stephen King’s classic short story “Survivor Type”, have returned with a powerful original tale of brotherhood, right versus wrong and the true roots of evil.

THE MORNINGSIDE MONSTER stars indie horror icon Tiffany Shepis (Nightmare Man, The Violent Kind, The Frankenstein Syndrome), Atlanta star Robert Pralgo (The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, The Blindside) and Georgia native Catherine Taber (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Old Republic, Just Like Heaven). The story unfolds around the discovery of a brutally murdered corpse in the woods of the otherwise-peaceful small town of Morningside, NJ. As the bodies pile up, Sheriff Tom Haulk and his deputy, Klara Austin, embark on a desperate race against time to catch the killer, pitting them against friends, enemies and even each other. “The film melds the frights and scares of the modern horror film with an emotionally gritty human story – and it’s a fantastic whodunnit!” says Ethridge.

THREE STILLS FROM PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4

Three stills from PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, opening nationwide on October 19th, have hit the web. The clips, the teasers, nor the official trailer, have really given much away (remember when trailers didn’t just show you all the good parts so you didn’t even bother going to see the movie?), and the horror world is staying very quiet about this film just as with the other PARANORMAL ACTIVITY films.

What we do know is PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4 follows the story of Hunter Rey who is now six years old and Katie. They have moved into a house together as mother and son and suddenly the neighbours start  to experience the same hauntings that occured to Katie and Kristi’s family. In the last installment, we learned a bit about how things began, perhaps in this installment, we’ll learn how things will end.

The film is being directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (who directed the third film) for Paramount Pictures based on a script by Zack Estrin (a writer/executive producer on ABC’s “The River”). Returning is Katie Featherston, who played Katie, who has appeared in all the films so far. And there are some rumors out there that Joost’s girlfriend, GLEE‘s Diana Agron, might make a cameo appearance.

Follow Paranormal Activity on Twitter (@TweetYourScream) for more upcoming announcements, and as always keep an eye on the official Paranormal Activity website!
