The first still has hit the web from the sequel to 2011’s GRAVE ENCOUNTERS, known so far as GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2.
John Poloquin will be directing from a script penned by the original’s helmers, the Vicious Brothers. GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2 will be available nationwide on demand October 2nd with a theatrical roll-out in October.
In 2011 GRAVE ENCOUNTERS was a found-footage horror phenomenon from the Vicious Brothers, with a trailer garnering over 20 million views on YouTube. Many people believed it was just a movie. They were wrong, and film student Alex Wright is out to prove it in GRAVE ENCOUNTERS 2.
While researching the events depicted in the original film and the subsequent disappearance of its lead ”actor” Sean Rogerson, Alex Wright received a bizarre video from a mysterious blogger named “DeathAwaits666.” Appearing to show Rogerson still alive but trapped inside the Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital from GRAVE ENCOUNTERS, Alex and his friends agree to meet the blogger at the infamous hospital in hopes of learning what really happened. To their horror they quickly find themselves face-to-face with unspeakable evil. Realizing that they must be smarter and faster than Rogerson and his crew to avoid suffering the same fate, they use their knowledge of the original film to do whatever it takes to survive.
I saw the first GRAVE ENCOUNTERS last month and was actually rather surprised with what they did with a tired format that’s been beaten to death. Yes it took place in an old insane asylum, yes it’s a found footage film, but they really went into the realm of weird with that one and although I was a little let down by the ending, I was, overall, very impressed with the creepy mind-warp they pulled off on a limited budget.
The original Jigsaw puppets used throughout the various SAW franchise are being sold on eBay (just follow the link to bid). No matter what you thought of the franchise (I thought they began to go downhill after the first 2), there is no denying that the Jigsaw puppets are perhaps the creepiest part about the films. And now you can have one…sitting in the corner of a room in your house…maybe the room you’re in…right now…staring at you…wondering if you want to play a game.

IFC Midnight has set a release date for Padraig Reynolds’ creature feature RITES OF SPRING. The film will be released on VOD July 27, alongside a limited theatrical release at New York City’s IFC Center. This film had, until recently, been flying under my radar. When I initially watched the trailer (see below), I thought it was going to be just another kidnap-torture-kill kind of flick (don’t get me wrong, I dig those kinds of films, but we’ve recently been inundated with quite a few of them). And then…then I found out there was going to be a monster in addition to the kidnap-torture-kill aspect. I’m a sucker for creature features, so I decided to check out the official site, and now all I can say is that I’m incredibly stoked to see it. The story, artwork, stills, and trailer have me thinking we might have a fantastically creepy indy horror flick on our hands.
Now we have two new stills that have hit the web, check ’em out below!
Starring AJ Bowen (THE SIGNAL, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL) and Anessa Ramsey (YELLOWBRICKROAD, THE SIGNAL), a group of kidnappers abduct the daughter of a wealthy socialite and hide out in an abandoned school in the middle of the woods. But feelings of guilt soon overtake them, dividing the group and putting their entire plan in jeopardy. The evening further spirals out of control when their poorly chosen hideout becomes a hunting ground for a mysterious creature that requires springtime ritualistic sacrifices!
Additionally, it will also feature creature design by Aaron Sims (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET: THE DREAM CHILD, WRONG TURN, THE MIST, I AM LEGEND, CLASH OF THE TITANS, & THE THING).
Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert’s Ghost House Pictures and Lionsgate have released a trailer for THE POSSESSION, directed by Ole Bornedal, and due for release on August 31st, 2012. Starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Madison Davenport, and Natasha Calis, the film (formerly THE DIBBUK BOX) is inspired by a 2004 Los Angeles Times story about a Jewish demon, or dibbuk, jinx box that went up for auction on eBay.
One family must unite in order to survive the wrath of an unspeakable evil. Clyde (Morgan) and Stephanie Brenek (Sedgwick) see little cause for alarm when their youngest daughter Em becomes oddly obsessed with an antique wooden box she purchased at a yard sale. But as Em’s behavior becomes increasingly erratic, the couple fears the presence of a malevolent force in their midst, only to discover that the box was built to contain a dibbuk, a dislocated spirit that inhabits and ultimately devours its human host.

Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON’T CRY) is officially behind the camera for CARRIE, the latest adaptation of Stephen King’s coming-of-age novella. The MGM/Screen Gems reboot has announced the full casting including Chloe Moretz (Kick Ass, Let Me in), Julianne Moore (Hannibal), Alex Russell (Chronicle), Ansel Elgort, Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers), Judy Greer (The Descendants) and Portia Doubleday (Youth In Revolt).

“The quiet suburb of Chamberlain, Maine is home to the deeply religious and conservative Margaret White (Moore) and her daughter Carrie (Moretz). Carrie is a sweet but meek outcast whom Margaret has sheltered from society. Gym teacher Miss Desjardin (Greer) tries in vain to protect Carrie from local mean girls led by the popular and haughty Chris Hargenson (Portia Doubleday, Youth in Revolt), but only Chris’ best friend, Sue Snell (Gabriella Wilde, The Three Musketeers), regrets their actions. In an effort to make amends, Sue asks her boyfriend, high school heartthrob Tommy Ross (newcomer Ansel Elgort), to take Carrie to prom. Pushed to the limit by her peers at the dance, Carrie unleashes telekinetic havoc.”
And as an added little gem, Chloe Moretz, who will be playing the role of Carrie White, was spotted on set in costume. Check out the two behind the scenes photos below!

Breaking Glass Pictures has announced the August 28th DVD release of Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era.
Edited for its TV debut earlier this year, the unrated DVD of Screaming in High Heels chronicles the careers of the original girls of terror as they show that cannibalism, demonic possession, flesh eating, and even chainsaw hookering is all in a days work.
Three girls living in Los Angeles, CA, in the 1980s found cult fame when they “accidentally” transitioned from models to B-movie actresses, coinciding with the major direct-to-video horror film boom of the era. Known as “The Terrifying Trio”, Linnea Quigley “The Return of the Living Dead”, Brinke Stevens “The Slumber Party Massacre” and Michelle Bauer “The Tomb”, headlined upwards of ten films per year, fending off men in rubber monster suits, pubescent teenage boys, and deadly showers.
They joined together in campy cult films like “Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama” (1988) and “Nightmare of Sisters” (1987). They traveled all over the world, met President Reagan, and built mini-empires of trading cards, comic books, and model kits. Then it all came crashing down. This documentary remembers these actresses – and their most common collaborators – on how smart they were to play stupid.
Featuring iconic directors of the time including David DeCoteau (Creepozoids), Richard Gabai (Nightmare Sisters), Fred Olen Ray (The Tomb), “Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era” takes viewers through the prime of the “Trio” as they rule the screen with their sex appeal and vocal cords, and ultimately, into their very real demise from the genre that made them blood covered stars.
Freestyle Digital Media LLC (FDM) has acquired the rights to MUNGER ROAD, a tension filled suspense-thriller from Insomnia Productions that will debut on DVD, Digital Download and Video On-Demand September 11th, 2012.
From the Press Release:
Written and directed by Nicholas Smith, produced by Kyle Heller and starring Bruce Davison (“X-Men,” “Luck”), MUNGER ROAD takes place in a sleepy Midwestern town on a night when a group of teens explore the famed ‘Munger Road’ – a spot where a horrific tragedy occurred years earlier. Something terrible happens to the group, forcing the local police to acknowledge there is a returning killer lurking in the area as thousands of people converge on the town for the annual Scarecrow Festival.
On the evening of October 7th, four teenagers from the town of Saint Charles, Illinois venture out to a dark, mysterious road where local legend is that the train tracks have been haunted for years. Unbeknownst to them, while the small town prepares for their annual Scarecrow Festival the next day, a child murderer from the past has escaped imprisonment and his whereabouts are unknown. The Police Chief and his Deputy begin a search in fear that the murderer has returned home. At the same time; the teenagers become stuck on Munger Road… unable to call for help. As the police collect more suspicious evidence about the child murderer we slowly realize that the haunting of Munger Road is directly connected to his murderous past. The race is on as the Chief realizes the teenagers are missing and could be in grave danger. As the police search for both the killer and the kids… they realize that the horror hasn’t even begun.
The film received a limited theatrical release in Chicago last year and received high praise, with Roger Ebert giving it three stars stating, “MUNGER ROAD does an efficient, skillful job of audience manipulation using the techniques of darkness and vulnerability, and the truth that a horror not seen is almost always scarier than the one you can see.”
